Why should I read outside of school?

Reading outside of school helps to increase reading level.  This will better prepare students for comprehending reading material in social studies and science curriculum.  Reading a variety of literature helps to build language skills, including vocabulary.  In essence, reading helps to expand the world that we live in.

Tips, Tips, Tips
  • Keep books in the car.
  • Get a library card.
  • Help your child select books with topics of interest.
  • Garage sales are great for picking up inexpensive books.
  • Let your kids see YOU read.
  • Make reading together fun and memorable.  (Even super readers like to read with someone else.)

How do I know what the "right" reading level is?

A good rule of thumb when helping your child select a book to read is to have him/her choose a page in the book (not the first page) and read it outloud.  If he/she doesn't know five or more of the words, then the book is too hard for pleasure reading.
